When it comes to diet (the habitual way one eats) we typically hear what we should start doing, eating more balanced meals, limiting sugar, etc., but what about the things we should stop doing?
Developing a good relationship with food often involves acknowledging the negative habits that we have been practicing for many years. As a dietitian coach I help my clients identify the habits they currently are doing and help guide them to the ones they want to do effortlessly. I'm not going to sugar-coat it, it takes time, education, and an everyday commitment. You don't have to do it alone.
Let's get into the 5 unhealthy diet habits to stop doing today.

1. Looking at what other people are doing
Now don't get me wrong it's nice to get inspired and motivated from others but if its a constant habit and you are not focusing on what YOUR body needs, wants, and desires and just basing it off the latest trend how will ever know how to eat independently?
2. Thinking you need to drastically switch up how you eat every few months
The technical definition of diet is the habitual what you eat, if there isn't consistency how eat how will you know what your body and mind actually prefer. Remember your diet isn't the latest fashion trend.
3. Asking family and friends for advice
Again it's ok to ask for advice but just because food is food you still should seek guidance and support from a professional who has years of experience and education in the field if you truly want effective change.
4. Thinking your diet is only supposed to be about nutrition
I know it's crazy that a dietitian is saying this but it needs to be said. Food is more than just macronutrients and calories it's experiences, its culture, it's memories, it's love and so much more. It's ok to eat for more than nutrition.
5. Thinking it's only meant to change your body
Unfortunately diet culture has done a damn good job at making us think that nutrition and exercise are the sole factors to our bodily changes and completely disregards mental, physical, emotional, and social health in pursuit of aesthetics.
